LF has a history of supporting educational efforts at other non-profit organizations and universities. We have supported classes, conferences, workshops, manuscripts, lectures series, and television programs for children. One of our goals is to use our resources to promote a deeper understanding of issues of peace, social justice and the environment.

LF Research encourages high school students, college students and graduate students to participate in the research being done at our lab. We have opportunities for motivated students at all levels to work on laboratory projects. We can sometimes pay a stipend, and other times we just offer an opportunity to get hands-on experience doing real science.
The Laucks Foundation has two intern opportunities:
1) Graduate student research opportunity. We have developed a new instrument for ice crystal growth and nucleation studies. We have a summertime Research Associate position working with this instrument to collect and analyze data sets from this experiment. If you are interested please contact brian@laucksfoundation.org.
2) Website content development intern. We are seeking someone with a atmospheric science background to develop an article on the topic, "The role of cloud microphysics in climate" that will discuss our current understanding of how various sub-millimeter-scale processes affect kilometer-scale cloud properties. Certainly one section of this article will place in a larger context our ice particle growth rate research efforts. The result of this effort will be a Scientific American-style article to be posted on the website and possibly published in a scientific journal. We expect the candidate is interested in science writing and will work closely with Dr. Swanson to help design and create the content. The job requires good writing and organizational skills and some experience with digital media. The intern will do planning and oversight of the writing and graphics. Dr. Swanson will provide scientific and editorial guidance. The ideal candidate will have some knowledge of cloud physics and ideally possess a BA in the Atmospheric Science. The job does not require relocation. A stipend is available commensurate with experience. Position will require a 3 month full-time commitment. If you are interested please contact brian@laucksfoundation.org. Please include a copy of your resume/bio and a sample of science writing.

We follow several topics of general interest and, from time to time, post articles on these topics or links to other organizations that have educational resources on these topics. We post new articles on the topic page and then archive the articles as new articles are posted.

The Laucks Foundation published 149 reprint mailings from 1979 to 1999. The mailings were put together by Eulah Laucks until 1997 and sent out on an occassional basis as she found material. As she wrote on the front of each mailing, "The Laucks Foundation from time to time calls attention to published material that might contribute toward clarification or understanding of critical issues affecting world peace." The reprint mailings are all available (link to reprint mailing page) as pdf documents and there is a master list (link) of all articles with title, author and date.
Although some of the topics are dated, many of the articles remain as relevant today as they were 20 years ago. Some of the reprint mailings are devoted to preliminary manuscripts of writers and were later published. Together these mailings provide a glimpse into the important issues people struggled with during those 20 years. These articles would be interesting for high school student doing research on social topics of those times, or anyone interested in the progressive conversation of those years.

LF supports other small non-profit organizations actively engaged in teaching or offering hands-on experience to students. Green Plate Special is one organization we have supported recently. Laura Dewell founded GPS to engage middle school youth in Seattle's Central District in learning "the self -sufficiency skills of growing, cooking, and eating healthy, tasty food."
