Grants by Laucks Foundation

Laucks Foundation has a small budget for granting to other organizations each year. We have recently been giving grants to organizations that are just starting out and have very tangible material needs. We feel that this approach gives us greater leverage with our small resources to make more significant contributions. In the past we have also supported small projects at larger organizations. We do not normally solicit proposals for grants.

THIS YEAR'S RECIPIENTS:

Green Plate Special

Green Plate Special is Seattle's only middle-school specific, curriculum-based program combining food growing with cooking. We teach practical everyday life skills and are part of the solution to breaking the cycle of childhood obesity and other food related health issues. We empower, urban youth to engage with nature, get their hands in the earth, and eat food that's good for them.

Seattle Music Partners

Seattle Music Partners' free after-school program is an innovative combination of weekly music instruction and mentoring. For 13 years, SMP has worked with underserved elementary school students in Seattle's Central District. We also provide a unique opportunity for skilled musicians to give back.

Our mission is to help underserved children learn to play instruments and read music.

To attain this goal, we recruit, train and support skilled high school, college-aged and community musicians as volunteer music tutors and mentors who lead one-on-one music lessons each week. These lessons are supplemented with a second afternoon of group instruction and ensemble work. We also provide instruments to participants and transportation where needed.

Victoria Cool Aid REES program

Victoria Cool Aid program started in 1999 by and for people living with mental illness, REES' approach is based on the idea that people with mental illness and addictions can make important contributions to the system that supports them. Cool Aid uses a co-operative, recovery-based approach to help reduce the isolation from community, friends and family that is often a result of mental illness and addictions. We work in partnership with families and professionals to enhance the lives of people with mental illnesses or addictions.
